Fran Benatt is based in Devon and although she trained as a painter, is primarily known as a ceramicist. She produces extremely fine work, including thrown pots, bowls, and decorative tiles, and there are suggestions of influences by Ivon Hitchens and Patrick Heron. Her ceramics bring beauty to everyday objects.  Fran lives, and has her studio, in a glorious location. She is extremely modest and self effacing – her work says it all!
“ It was while studying painting I discovered the pleasure of  working with clay.  On leaving art school I worked in small studio potteries in London and Denmark. Then, for four years, I taught ceramics part time at a comprehensive school, leaving me with part of the week to study sculpture. For twenty years I ran a pottery studio with my husband, making mainly decorative stoneware.Recently I returned to my first love painting, producing mostly figurative abstract work in oil. Most of my paintings have sold through a London Gallery.
I now often combine painting and ceramics using my knowledge of glazes and decorative techniques and am enjoying the exploration”
